Budget Allocation :
Shifting the focus away from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the Union Budget has sought to give a greater thrust to its other flagship programme Bharat Nirman. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has made a total allocation of Rs. 58,000 crore, marking a Rs. 10,000-crore increase.

Bharat Nirman, a programme to build rural infrastructure, was launched by the Government of India in 2005.
Phase I of the programme was implemented in the period 2005-06 to 2008-09.
Phase II is being implemented from 2009-10 to 2011-12.
Phase II is being implemented from 2009-10 to 2011-12.
